Art Journaling : Creative Courage

“When the winds of change blow, some build walls, others build windmills.”

Old Chinese proverb

Overview

Creativity is at the root of happiness and innovation, and can easily be misunderstood and opportunities lost. Engaging in regular creative activities brings a lowering of stress, increased self-esteem and improved productivity. Working with a creative mindset allows us to make extraordinary personal discoveries, and startling connections in life and at work, move beyond the routine. It can be terrifying to be creatively courageous, allowing yourself to be vulnerable, on a journey without a fixed destination. When we allow ourselves to just follow our curiosity in that moment and be immersed in a creative flow… everything is suddenly possible. Through providing a safe space to explore, and prompts and techniques, this Art Journaling: Creative Courage Programme immerses you for 13 weeks in the therapeutic act of exercising your ‘creative muscle,’ as a group, and beyond into maintaining independent creative habits, and to become a more powerful and mindful observer.

Testimonials from June 2019

It was a great experience for me as a rational and straightforward person. I wanted to discover/develop my creativity if any 😉 Harriet helped me to fully express my creativity as well as to see and feel part of the world I couldn’t see/feel before by beeing mindful every day! Thanks Harriet!” - Aroa

“As a musician, I initially took Harriet’s Art Journaling looking for expressive means to accompany a musical project I was working on. I was hoping to create a journal, to which I’d be able to return when trying to trace back ideas, feelings, and intuitions for future productions. Eventually, I discovered that the course allowed me to concentrate, two hours a week, on a different artistic flow from the kind I had known. I enjoyed the relaxed-yet-creative atmosphere, learned new techniques and explored new materials. Harriet was a wonderful teacher, attending to the individual choices of each one of us, and encouraging self-exploration. Her space is inspiring, very well equipped, full of surprising materials and an impressive library to draw on for reference. Among the techniques we learned I especially liked working with images, transferring them on paper and making prints. The techniques are easy to repeat at home. I'm now inspired to create daily routines at home, to keep an art journal, both for myself and for the whole family.”- Inbal

Course outline

This NEW 12 week programme is a very special journey of two halves. In the first 6 weeks we work with tutor given prompts and mixed media ideas and techniques, to ground you in a working practice for self-expression, learning to see the opportunity in mess making and mistakes. Through combining visual and written journaling, we weave in textures, images, words, pattern, layers to bring your ideas to life. We will be building everyday creative consciousness, allowing you to be living more mindfully. In the second half of this course, we begin with sensory-based prompts, awakening memories and making out-of the-box associations, as well as creative and mindful living philosophies such as wabi-sabi. We look to connect with your own personal motivations and life experiences, to grow either a specific personal project or extended in depth explorations for continued journaling. Finally, we meet a month later to reflect on independent progress, and further imbed our creative rituals.
